"Music in Two Dimensions" is a series of pieces from 2009-2010 where I constrained my music to the interaction of two perceivable parameters. This piece was the second written in the series, and was originally scored for organ and bassoon, I later revised the piece for organ solo, hence the "2a" numbering.
In writing these pieces, I reduced the musical surface to the bare minimum of differences that I found interesting, inviting the audient to listen further into the sound. This piece is a sequence of blocks, differentiated from each other by duration, timbre, and pulse-tempo. The same chord is played throughout, only the organ stops are altered between blocks. The stops are performed as a slow timbral bisbigliando, the player is asked to "aim for subtle timbral changes between stops", so that the pulse lies almost under the surface of the chord. This (mostly) subtle variation in timbre and pulse-tempo between successive blocks provides a shifting territory of differences, affording listeners varying levels of structural significance with which they can map the piece according to how they hear.
