imagined community takes its name from the 1983 book by Benedict Anderson. In this book he describes nation-states as socially constructed communities. This piece is not a nationalist work or about a particular national identity, but rather the ‘imagined community’ that can be found within a musical ensemble and that is constructed during performance. At the time of writing this piece, I was interested in ideas of northern-ness and ‘the North’ (I am from the North of England); I read about Sámi practices of song and music making that express individualised aspects of identity. This also resonated with my experience of naming practices in British Sign Language: the idea that sound or gesture can be representative of something that is not generalisable but belongs solely to the individual. Here, the choir respond to notations that are in some ways open and offer choice to the performers, but also require them to act expressively as a group. imagined community was written for Humberstone Choral Society and first performed by them with conductor Motje Wolf and improvising saxophonist Dylan Menzies. In this version, the improvising soloist has been replaced by electronic sounds created for this performance, and developed from samples of the choir in their rehearsal.
