This piece was written and developed by Alistair Zaldua during the Organ+Electronics tour.
The title is taken from one of Roger Caro‘s descriptions of a spagyric transmutation as documented in The Great Work Photographed. A lab alchemist understand all material as a form of frozen life, understanding the changes and how to respond to them related to the increasing ability to “read the ‘mind’ of all material” (Salfluêre).
This piece presents the situation where the organist responds to the electronics by making gradual changes of timbre to a constant band of sound. Although the score is not as precisely notated as in my previous compositions there are precise boundaries as to the degree of change (depress/release of pitch, change of manual, change of stop) the performer is allowed to do throughout to prioritise listening and judge changes from that.
